Moving on with the London project

Hi all,

As we discussed in class this week, it's time for us all to start thinking about the London project in more detail - and to make a start on getting the piece of art together and preparing the crit.

You'll remember that thereflective journal and sketchbook are important tools for collecting thoughts, feelings and ideas, and will really help you when you are thinking about what you would like to say in the crit. Next week, we'll look at some language that will be helpful in the crit.

Let's use this page of the blog to post some of our thoughts from the journal about the process of producing the piece of art. Your thoughts may help other members of the class to get ideas for their own projects - so remember to read other people's posts as well.

You're also very welcome to comment on other people's ideas - particularly if you have something to say that you feel might help them. This is also a useful space to communicate with classmates who are not in your group for the project.

So, please leave a comment here from your journal. You can either post a specific entry, or a collection of thoughts and ideas from different ideas in your journal.

  1. My London project is cemetery related to memories. To be honest, at first when I heard that I completely misunderstood what I have to do, but after listennig to lecture, I knew the project needs my own stories from my point of view. So I thought again the reason why I was interested in the cemetery of London. For the first time when I went to Hampstead cemetery is near my house was this April. While I was walking around there I was very peaceful and even comfortable, as the place was almost the same as a park: the location and atmosphere. Such amazing things are totally different from Korea’s are usually far away dwelling and gloomy mood, which stirred up my curiosities. But as time went on, the place evoked my father passed away long time ago in my mind, since my father’s is also located in my family orchard. To my shame, I wasn’t a good daughter when he was alive, so I used to go to my father’s grave quite often to memorize him and be excused my faults, but eventually, I had been given consolation by there. The cemetery also seemed to be for living people rather than dead people. The flowers and photos were put in front of someone’s grave as I did let me imagine another given comfort through sharing memories with dead people. It might be the same as reason as going to a church. So, I’m going to focus on the relation between cemetery and memories. Additionally, the background history of London cemeteries should be researched to find the relevance to this city.

  2. Samuel Johnson once said “When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life”. London, as the creative city, is like a heart. All the designers and artists worldwide gather in the heart, get enriched, and then flow to different places of the world as new blood. I have always been longing for studying in London.

When I first time walk on London Oxford street, and then pass the shop.I saw a T-shirt which is have a sentence "I love London"on it.At movement a very striking idea come out from my brain that is use T-shirt to illustrate my ideas.Today I bought two white T-shirt which are premium cotton. Then my plan is use different fabric and decorate to do a sentence "I Love London".

  3. As I mentioned in the class,my London project is “Notting Hill Market”. Last night, I embark on doing this project. Firstlly, I should consider the layout of this post. I want to fold the post into sevral squares. Secondly, I want to find out a proper way to diaplay my photos. Finally, I would decide which colour I will use. I had finished a draft by using softwares.

Today,in order to accomplish the project, I went to Notting Hill Market again. But the weather really upset me. I just took 12 photos here.

  4. Last week I used my free time after class to search some window display, I ‘ve been to Covent Garden, Oxford Circus and Piccadilly, I really found some very cool window display there, and also was attracted by the window shape and frame, so I suddenly decided to add these elements as well to enrich my artwork.

The window display changed very quickly, you can find different decoration every week in the same shops, so I was quite disappointed that I didn’t took pictures at once in the first week I came here. BTW, I want to recommend you guys, if you hang around Oxford Circus, you can pass though a department store “Liberty” there has very beautiful display every week. Yesterday I went there, some of them it’s relative to the subject “surreal house”.

  5. I am going to note the progress of the London Project. Firstly, I was thinking about gardens or parks for my London Project. I found that there are two types of gardens. Each type of park has different of elements. One of them has the elements: threes, squirrels and dogs, and the other one has the elements: flowers, books(store) and coffee(shop).

To state former example, when I came to London, I lived in the north London. The house I lived was near a park, that has a lot of trees and the squirrels live everywhere in the park. I often went through the park. Particularly in the morning, I found a number of people who run or walk around there with their dogs as exercise.

One the other hand, the other type of the park has more different atmosphere. When you go to the place, you can have a cup of coffee in the shop as seeing the fountain that is surrounded a lot of flowers. Next to the coffee shop, there is a small secondhand bookshop that you can buy books cheaper than others bookshops. The reason for these elements, I thought that the latter types of park seem to have attraction. However, It could be said that not all of the latter types of park are attractive rather than the former types of park. Because actually I love both type of park.

The first my plan of the London Project was about the aspect of parks. However, I changed the topic chosen to the signboard. When I came here, I found a lot of local shops that have their own signs characterized their policy. The signs help customers to identify each shop easily as well as they are attractive. They have chosen certain shapes and colors to produce these marks. In addition there is more important things that the shops does not exist in my country, because the characters of signboards can also be seen global food shops such as Macdonald and Starbucks. They have unique marks as a part of their structure of branding. Therefore I would like to focus on local shops in London despite of the global shops. The shops here can be symbols as the character of London.

  6. I used to see some graffiti in Beijing 798 art district, which are created by artists who have distinct backgrounds, personalities, hobbies and nationalities and read a variety of books introducing the graffiti in London and I have been attracted by it, because it is decorative and diverse and the artists can express their ideas freely in public places, therefore, it is an excellent art form that take the drawing and painting from easel to the public, I found that London is a paradise for graffiti artists and it is prevalent among people living there after arriving in London, so I prepare to go to the Bethnal green, Brick lane and Southbank to search some outstanding graffiti spots in London and collect the artists’ graffiti, especially Banksey making a Website, for the reason that graffiti is an interaction form to communicate with audience and I believe that website also focus on the communication between audience and computers, as a result, there are some relationship between them and audience can enjoy graffiti better and conveniently using website. However, I cannot make the website elaborately enough, because I only have one more week to finish this project, so I should mainly concentrate on the homepage and second pages. In this website project, I should put in images, words and sound except video, because I am afraid that there is not enough time to make video.

  9. Say hi to everyone~
My project is about people's wearing of London, and I will divide into different areas to explore my subject. For instance, I am living in east area in London where have many middle east people. Their clothes are very colorful and have native feature.

I will use bus as a clue, and make a map to express my project. Because I go to school by bus everyday, and I enjoyed observing the people through the window. So I have this idea to make a bus trip, going to different areas to discovery something about my subject.

Today I went to the west area of London, and the destination was Hotting Hill Market where attract many young people, they wear vivid and fashionable clothes and their accessories are also very stylish. That is a little bit different from the east area.

Then I will continue exploring these areas and developing my project.

  10. Yesterday I went to Portabello market. Even though the weather is terrible, It is so crowed visiting the market. I could take some photos of all signage shops that are related to their products so I have to come there again. Some shops represent their identities by using the shape of products, for example, the rare book shop and the antique pot. The pattern and colour can also depict the origin of product such as the highland store using the Scottish pattern of their hat and cloths.
Today I went to Carnaby street to take photos of signage shops as well. I got many colourful pictures because it is sunny.
Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend.

You will love it's passion, love its old, love it's fashion. To me, it is the most specific food fell in love with London.

  12. Today, I have been to Brick lane and Bethnal green again as well as taken many photographs. I find that brick lane is a place with energy, force, vigor and enthusiasm, because there are lots of market stalls selling many interesting things, like shoes, old books, DIY T-shirt and stuff like that. Most importantly, I found many new graffiti on the wall of alley.

After taking this photographs, I start to organize my specific things of my project, I decide to create an illustration of graffiti style to be the homepage of the website. The content script of the project is divided into four parts, the first part is the introduction of London graffiti sites, the second part is the introduction of graffiti artists, the third one is the methods of creating graffiti by the artists, the last part is enjoyment of the famous graffiti works in London.

  13. After reading your journals, it seems that all of you have already found some nice points. This is very exciting.

For me, my london project will focus on the street names. After arriving in London, I've been to several lovely places, I really love those narrow and old lanes which gave me lot's of new perception. When I followed my feelling and looked around, the scenery around sometimes make me feel like in the dream.

One day, I went to some galleries with Jinny. We saw two great photographic exhibitions at that day. When planed to go back, we found that we seems to get lost. Jinny took out a map which we found in the gallery and tried to find the way back. That was the first time I noticed the street names here. Compared with
the dream-like streets, their names became the only real thing to me, and make me feel safty. Fortunately we finally found our way home.(Which attribute the success to Jinny of course.)

After back home, I put the map on the table and tried to locate the way we've been to. Then I found that many streets have interesting names. After searching on the
internet I disvocer that some of street names come from legends and stories. All of these discoveries stimulated my interest of street names and let me focus my London project on it. I hope I can walk through those streets again; and then take pictures for the signs of the streets. Moreover, try to dicover the origin of their names.

I suppose this would be an interesting process. But now the the only thing i worried
about is the time. Due to the limit of time, I may only have to focus on several areas and accomplish my project.

Anyway, hope we will all have good luck.

  14. Mentioned about London, I would like to say honestly, when I first get to Heathrow Airport, I feel there is nothing special than Beijing. Along the four lanes highway there are skyscraper and huge billboards with famous star on them. During these days I spend in this city, I begin to know it well step by step. Which surprised me most is the architecture. Unlike the Chinese one, most buildings in London have a long history and typical appearance; most of them are about 2 or 3 floors high but extremely refinement, in my London Project I focus on the top of buildings. I believe the sharp top here is not only for keeping the traditional style but also as drainage for the rain. This design has combined the aesthetic and function perfect. Another thing which attracted me is the relationship between people and the space the architecture offered. Everyone has made a full use of the space and enjoyed it. They can use it freely to do what they want. Therefore I would like to divide my work into two parts, one is poster which will be done by computer and the other is illustration which will be down by hand. Though I only have few sketches I will work hard on it.

  15. About the London Project, I attractive by cards and cards shop. As we know, card is a big thing in England. British not good at express their emotion, so the cards become the necessaries of their life. That’s why we can see cards shop in every street. Last time I went to a cards shop and find something interesting in the shelves of birthday cards. The birthday cards marked with years of age, 1, 2 and 3 years, until the age of 18 there have a special card waiting for you. In addition, 20, 30 and 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90,100 years old, there all had the key card. But there also have some particular number like 18, 21, 29 which were catch my eye, because these ages are really important to us. From this I feel how careful the British is.

How to do the project? At present, I plan to visit several cards shop and find some interesting details and make records such as cards design, shop design, display and style. What’s more, I intend to make some cards link to the impress of London.

  16. I have to say sorry to all of you, because I change my London project again. After thinking about it carefully in weekend, I recognized that it is better to find something more close to me instead of just interesting thing.

I arrived in London three weeks ago, so I am absolutely a new one to the city and attacked by thousands of information everyday. How special I can be? Actually, the way I see the city is not such different from any other tourists, but maybe I am going to be homesick quickly in next few weeks because it is clear that I will stay here over a year rather than half a month.

When I arranged my photos in london, I noticed that many photos I took unconsciously were about landscape, roofs and sky. I tried to contain many peaceful or quiet time and space by shooting them, and I hoped to let my family and friends in China know how beautiful and happy they are. In addition, I realized the times I mentioned people and life in my hometown were tend to be more and more everyday, So I decided to make my London project into a gift for them to relieve upcoming homesick.

Therefore, the topic of final work is gift. As for the form, I inspired by snow globe, I always attracted by the little world in each of them, it froze many beautiful moments. So I will draw some beautiful moments in London in my mind on the surface of a little glass bottle, and fill of some thing in the bottle to make it look similar to a snow globe maybe. I am sure that this topic is the most close to me right now, and I am very willing to finish it as also project as gift. It will be an enjoyable process.

  17. I am sorry I did not check the blog those days,so I am late to post my journal about London project.
I changed my subject this week,my new topical is colours in London. The ads and leaflets attracted me to explorer the city.As we know, leaflets is the most direct way to know what is going on in the city, they carry a lot of information.
So what am going to do is to design a handmade booklet which illustrate the colours in London.
The basic materia of the booklet is just one piece of paper,I will make it as a simple blank book which has three pages, those pages composes of the ads and leaflets that I collect. Then I will select all the interesting elements and classify them by different colours. At last, I am going to reordered the facts and compose a new illustration.
It is very significant, for me, to accomplish the work by the free leaflets, all the things though very normal to collect but really represent London, it reminds me of the moment that I first steped in the city. For another,it is creative to do this kind of work in my English course, it must be the most fantastic experience i have never done before!

  18. My London project is ‘The Architecture of London--Old and new'. So these days I thought a lot about this theme. I want to choose some buildings which can represent London's architecture. I looked the Gherkin, the St. Paul etc. last sunday, I went out to take some photos. These buildings are so imposing and mangnificent! I drew some images in the draft book, I want to get some inspirations.Yerstoday I continue my London project, I took a photo in our learing building, it's so amazing see so mang imposing buldings in our classroom! Then I came back home, I still drew some inspirations in my draft book, I found a interesting sence, when I drawing the image, another new idea will come ioto my mind immediately, it's just feel 'never end in mind'! I really enjoy the process of doing the project! the drafts attach in my blog.
